After a decade-long journey which has encompassed big moments such as ‘Soldier of Love’ and the Big Machine Records EP ‘Glass Box Confessional’, POESY today closes a chapter on her current identity and embarks upon a new journey as Serra Marinheiro. She makes that final transition as she shares the final POESY track – and the next step as Serra Marinheiro – with ‘cataracts’. Listen HERE.

This evolution is deeply personal. As the years passed, POESY began to feel like living in disguise. At some point, the small compromises she made snowballed to become someone she wasn’t. Serra Marinheiro, therefore, is an opportunity for her to embrace her inner-self: the confidence and the determination, but the vulnerabilities too. This change also provides something fresh and exciting for fans, too, providing a new voice to champion assertiveness, independence and empowerment – all strengths that can inspire fellow female musicians.

The choice of name also reflects her roots: Serra being the name of the village her family are from in Portugal, and Marinheiro being the name of her grandfather’s restaurant, itself a tribute to the sailors from the local area.

Serra commented, “This music is the anger in my gums and the moment I finally dared to stick around long enough to say to someone, ‘You see me’. POESY was a girl afraid to disturb the universe, Serra Marinheiro is the woman ready to let you hear the scream.” Her full statement is HERE.

That metamorphosis is completed in style with ‘cataracts’. It’s a very fitting swansong, one in which the sparse, desolate beauty of the piano-centred production is given a searing intensity with the power and emotion that flows from her vigorous vocal. And lyrically it’s about moving forwards, too.

As she explains, “I wrote ‘cataracts’ for anyone who’s ever been painfully blind to a situation because they were too busy forcing themselves to see the glass half full. That’s why it felt like the perfect final word from POESY – to finally close this chapter of doubting myself. It’s humbling to know the older you get, the more you realise there’s so much you still have to learn.”

She wrote and produced ‘cataracts’ alongside Matt Ingram (Florence + The Machine, Laura Marling). There’s much more new music waiting to emerge from Serra, too.
