Nashville’s Ovven (pronounced oven) is the indie rock/alt-country project of Owen Burton. Their 2026 debut album, Gnawing At The Cord, was produced by Alex Farrar (MJ Lenderman, Wednesday, Indigo De Souza) and was met with critical acclaim. Ovven has been featured on Spotify’s “Indie Twang”, Apple Music’s “New in Rock” and “New in Alternative”, the Zane Lowe Show, SiriusXM, and ACME radio’s artist of the month.
Hailed as “a fuzz-guitar, alt-country tour-de-force” (The Indie Scene) Gnawing At The Cord is “an album that feels urgent, immediate, and unpretentious” (Under The Radar Magazine). With wry lyrics, everyman vocals, and guitars that alternate between twang and squeal, Ovven was named ‘best indie band of 2025’ by Detroit Bands That Suck, while SiriusXM Outlaw Country dubbed their debut “an instant classic.”

Though Ovven is a new project, Owen Burton has played in bands since childhood. This took him to DePaul University School of Music in Chicago where he studied classical guitar under Mark Maxwell. By graduation he had built up a full studio of guitar students and was gigging around Chicago playing styles ranging from classical to bluegrass.
By 2024 the music that would become Gnawing At The Cord was starting to take shape. Owen was feeling pulled to return to his roots and start a more rock-leaning project. He was sitting on a few demos he’d made at home and decided to cold call Drop of Sun Studios in Asheville, North Carolina to see if they might be willing to work with him. To his surprise they agreed, penciling him in some two months away from then. Though he only had three finished songs at that time, Owen found excitement in the deadline. The tight turnaround left no room for second-guessing. It was a chance to work instinctively, to follow where the songs wanted to go without overthinking. That urgency sits at the heart of Ovven’s music.
Gnawing At The Cord is defined by contrast—the self-deprecating wit of slacker rock met with the sad specificity of country, guitars that swing from blown-out fuzz to lean and clean. That tension is the point. It reflects the world as Owen sees it: often mundane, sometimes surprising, and perpetually sad yet funny at the same time.
