From The New Album ‘Social Disguises’, Out February 20th – Pre-Order Here
The Enemy’s current resurgence has seen them sell out their entire UK autumn headline shows, a run of ten dates in which the electrifying reactions that they have received has created one of the best tours in their 20-year history. A big part of the tour’s success has been the audience’s excitement for the set’s new songs – the recent single‘Not Going Your Way’ and their brand new track ‘Trouble’, which is out today alongside its official video. ‘Trouble’ ramps up anticipation ahead of ‘Social Disguises’ – their first new album in a decade – which is out on February 20th.
Blaring out in a riot of ragged riffs, taut rhythms and a punkish sneer from frontman Tom Clarke, ‘Trouble’ is pure rabble-rousing energy. But that frenetic rush and biting energy further fuels the band’s love of gritty melody and a chorus that instantly and almost subversively sneaks into your memory. Lyrically it’s a new take on something that The Enemy have always had a flair for: addressing issues and discussion points that will be quickly relatable for fans.

Tom Clarke says, “‘Trouble’ has always felt to me like the spiritual successor to ‘Had Enough’. It’s a driving two-chord rant. I think every generation has, or will at some point experience the sensation that culture is changing and that they’re struggling to keep up. Trouble is about the moments of exasperation when you experience that struggle. When you realise you’re no longer part of counter-culture, or sub-culture, when you’re in that grey area between being anti-establishment, and being the establishment.”
The video for ‘Trouble’ puts The Enemy back on stage – their natural environment. Filmed in stark black-and-white, the trio power through a performance of the song with full-on intensity. Meanwhile, the visual’s rapidfire edits heighten the song’s raging dynamics. It was directed by Morgan Tedd.
As with ‘Not Going Your Way’, ‘Trouble’ was one of 90 demos that The Enemy wrote in a deluge of inspiration after spending so much time about. Its potential was realised with producer and old friend Matt Terry, who they previously worked with for signature songs including ‘40 Days and 40 Nights’ and ‘No Time For Tears’.
Beyond their storming recent shows, The Enemy’s return has been greeted with coverage from NME, Radio X and many more. Earlier this year, aBBC report looked at how their song ‘We’ll Live And Die In This Towns’ became an anthem for their fellow fans of Coventry City. It also compared it to such iconic football songs as ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ and ‘I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles’.
It all adds to a promising second era for The Enemy with ‘Social Disguises’. Their first era was full of big highlights as they became one of the great forces of UK indie-rock: a Platinum-certified #1 debut album followed by two more two Top 10 records; two Top 10 singles and two Top 20 hits; shows with Oasis and The Rolling Stones; and an NME Award.
‘Social Disguises’ is available to pre-order HERE. A signed and extended 20-track double-vinyl (one yellow, one orange) is the pick of the physical formats from the band’s official store. All album bundles add an exclusive bonus acoustic CD.
