Featuring Ani Mijatović (keys), Sam Davies (guitar), Rob Henderson (bass) and Aaron Liam Singh (drums) alongside Tom Dogall, Luft formed following Dougall’s relocation from London, after his previous band, TOY, entered an indefinite hiatus and the group emerged from a period of personal and creative transition.

Their debut album, Hellingly, is a ten-track exploration of displacement, nostalgia, excess and endurance, shaped by the contrasting worlds of London, Berlin and the English countryside. Reflecting on a changing England, Dougall’s songwriting captures the effects of gentrification, the cost-of-living crisis and the fading rituals of a bygone era, while finding new possibilities in the energy and hedonism of Berlin. Wistful and urbane, romantic yet unsentimental, the album inhabits a nocturnal world where the familiar and the strange continually collide.

The album takes its title from a former mental asylum near Dougall’s childhood home in East Sussex. Demolished in 2010 to make way for new housing, the building remains a powerful symbol of the troubled alternative worlds and lingering memories that inform the record.

Produced by Luke Haines, whose own work has explored similarly distinctive English landscapes, Hellingly combines sharp, melodic songwriting with mordant wit and vivid, observational storytelling. While Dougall is the principal songwriter, the album is a collaborative achievement, enriched by Mijatović’s spectral vocals and elegant keys, Davies’ psychedelic guitar work, and the tightly interwoven rhythms of Henderson and Singh.

Drawing on touchstones ranging from the Kinks and krautrock to Lou Reed and Marc Bolan, Luft forge a sound and identity entirely their own. Hellingly is a portrait of England viewed from a distance: a journey through strange worlds, shaped by the pull of a past that remains difficult to leave behind.
