Costello Music cemented The Fratellis’ status as one of the UK’s most infectious indie-rock exports. Two decades after its release, the Glasgow band today announce their return to Dublin to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the record that helped define a generation of British indie-rock.

Released in 2006, the landmark debut album spent 83 weeks in the UK Top 100 and delivered a trio of enduring indie-disco favourites: Henrietta, Whistle for the Choir and Chelsea Dagger.

Since releasing Costello Music in 2006, splitting and reforming in 2012, The Fratellis have continued to evolve while welcoming new generations of fans. The band’s pandemic-delayed sixth album, Half Drunk Under a Full Moon, showcased The Fratellis at their most exuberant. A kaleidoscopic collection that radiated joy, the record reaffirmed the band’s ability to lift spirits and turn a song into a celebration.

The Fratellis celebrate 20 years of Costello Music,

From its flamboyant title track and lush arrangements steeped in brass and strings to the stomping singalongs that first brought them to prominence, Half Drunk Under a Full Moon was a treasure trove of excess.

The album followed In Your Own Sweet Time, which marked a creative high point for Jon Fratelli, bassist Barry Wallace and drummer Mince. Reflecting on the band’s evolution, Jon said:

“There was a definite sense with the last record that we got closer to reaching the destination we’d always been heading towards. It felt like the twenty-three years I’d spent learning how to write songs and the thirteen years the band had been playing together really merged. There were a few ideas and threads from In Your Own Sweet Time that we wanted to play with some more, to stretch them to their limits on the new album. With some of those ideas, we had to kind of go overboard, as there are certain songs where to overdo them is always less of a sin than to underdo them!”

Half Drunk Under A Full Moon marked several firsts for the band: it was the first album on which Jon brought in backing singers to bolster his huge choruses, the first to feature recurring characters throughout many of its lyrics, and the first on which the sound he heard for the record dictated the songwriting.

“In the past, every album had to be a sonic departure from the last, to get me excited about writing again,” Jon explained. “This time, I started with threads from In Your Own Sweet Time, from the song Starcrossed Losers in particular, and spun out from there. Immediately, I heard melodies and knew where I was headed.”

Twenty years on from the record that introduced Chelsea Dagger to dance floors and festival fields around the world, The Fratellis’ legacy continues to be defined by their unmistakable melodies, infectious choruses and enduring connection with audiences.
