Gary Numan’s 2011 album ‘Dead Son Rising’ is among the most eclectic and experimental of his career – and being long out of print, second hand copies have become increasingly expensive. All of which makes it the ideal time for a long overdue Deluxe Edition of the album, which will be released on November 20th and is available to pre-order HERE.
‘The Fall’ is an immediate highlight of the set, a perfect synthesis of Numan’s darkwave era and the hookiness of his early synth-pop years. Like the near title track (‘Dead Sun Rising’), it has also featured in his live shows this year. After the dense, mood-setting instrumental, ‘Resurrection’, the album bursts to life with the frantic industrial pulse of ‘Big Noise Transmission’, before stepping into the explosive stop-start dynamics of ‘When The Sky Bleeds, He Will Come’ as well as more sparse, haunting soundscapes such as ‘For The Rest Of My Life’.
The double-vinyl format also includes the album’s similarly rare remix companion ‘Dead Moon Falling’ which was curated by Gary Numan and his key collaborator Ade Fenton. Featuring mixes from Tim Burgess (Charlatans), Alec Empire (Atari Teenage Riot), Gazelle Twin and more, this represents its first ever vinyl release.
The 4CD set adds four alternate mixes of ‘The Fall’ to the original album, including Ade Fenton’s previously unreleased remix. CD2 features ‘Dead Moon Falling’, boosted with the addition of two collaborations, ‘For You’ with Andy Gray, and ‘Petals’ with Officers. CDs 3 and 4 feature yet another rarity, the ‘Big Noise Transmission’ live album which was recorded at The Ritz, Manchester on December 8th 2011. It blends material from ‘Dead Son Rising’ with some of his best known material as well as curiosities such as the b-side ‘Noise Noise’ and an early version of ‘Everything Comes Down To This’, which would later feature on the 2013 album ‘Splinter’.
Gary Numan says, “‘Dead Son Rising’ started out in life as a collection of unused demos from years previous that Ade Fenton and I planned to complete and release as a gap filler while I worked on new songs for the next official studio album. It became far more than that. As the work progressed we increasingly added new material until the original demo idea was little more than a vague shadow hiding within the finished album. It became a different animal entirely to what was originally intended, something we are both extremely proud of.”
Next month will see Gary Numan embark upon a major North American headline tour – his second of the year. In 2027 he is confirmed as very special guest on Simple Minds’ arena tour, which hits Australia and New Zealand in February before coming to the UK and Ireland in May.
